Rain

This was written just over a week after we showed up in Cuenca on January 8. It started raining again these last few weeks and found this to still be true as we are thinking about wrapping up our time in Ecuador and coming back to the Northwest for a two month layover.

Kristin and I have been craving real coffee and espresso recently. Instant Nescafé is not cutting it. As we begun to walk towards a new high brow coffee shop, which also serves whiskey and Cuba Libres along side an extensive espresso menu, it began to rain. Now, Kristin and I had been told to expect the rain, we had mentally and physically prepared ourselves for cold, wet weather. Looking back on this advice I find it skewed. When I think of cold and wet I put together a mental picture of 42° and walls of rain. Upon arrival we have seen the thermometer dip below 60° only twice during the day. It has been much more common to see mid 70’s and sunburns.

Today’s sudden rain showers have been a comfort to me. In a place where so little is familiar it is nice to have some good old fashioned rain showers. I like the sound of rain against our tile roof, against the hood of my jacket and the familiar rings in growing puddles. Many people I have known complain about the wet northwest rain. I find myself calm in the face of it, comforted.
